Envision: Taipei

God’s calling us. Whether at home or abroad, as followers of Christ we’ve been tasked by the Son, on behalf of the Father with one central mission: ‘love God, love people’, and ‘go make disciples of the nations’, or as we at Envision would say: Move People [&] Shape Culture. When you engage with Envision: Taipei, you’re moving. When you hop the pond and land in Taipei, your shaping, allowing the Father to mold your new normal to fit perfectly into His plans for you. It’s a high invitation/high challenge missional living, at the heart of a thriving Asian metropolis, bursting at the seams with a lonely, broken culture, searching for life’s meaning, longing for a purpose, a place to belong.

When you join the Envision: Taipei team you’re answering the call, for a few weeks, a few months, or even a few years. For many, this is where the journey begins, moving from marginal living to a [re]shaped holistic lifestyle on mission. It’s our hope the journey doesn’t just begin here, but continues on long after you’ve finished your time with Envision.

If you’re willing to join us on this life-changing adventure, check out our Business as Mission, TESOL, and Church internship.

Short Term Trip

BAM:

Our site runs a coffee shop that is an example to Taipei of what heavenly business practices can look like. While involved in the BAM track, you will learn about the BAM movement from our on-site BAM practitioners as well as get to try BAM out for yourself by working on various projects or working behind the bar. We are always looking for individuals who are willing to try and learn new things, organized, have a business or coffee background, and want to impact the world for Christ.

TESOL:

Do you love students? Do you want the opportunity to demonstrate the love of Christ to dozens of young Taiwanese through teaching English? English is a highly desirable skill in Taiwan and people are eager to learn. We have a number of partner English schools who are willing to have you come and teach their students. In this track, you will gain English teaching techniques, classroom management skills, and hands-on teaching experience.

Church Ministries:

The goal of all our ministries at Envision: Taipei is to point people toward the church, the body of Christ. In this track you will be able to serve the church in a variety of ways. Perhaps you would be able to join the worship team, help with Sunday service logistics, participate in street evangelism and prayer walks, or simply sit in our coffee shop making conversation with people interested in practicing English. We have many opportunities available that will allow you gain practical experience of working with a church plant in Asia.

MEET THE TEAM

Chris & Jamie O’Dell have been serving with Envision Taiwan as Site Coordinators since 2008. Jamie came first, by accident. She was supposed to go to Turkey on a short-term missions trips in 2005,  but the trip was canceled and then switched to Taiwan. She ended up leading the team and went back three summers out of the four she was in school at Crown College. Chris was on one of those teams, by accident. He was supposed to go to Thailand, but the leaders felt God was calling him to Taiwan, so he responded. Two months after the trip, Chris and Jamie started dating and got married one year later.

While praying for direction on next steps after graduation from Crown in 2008, they received a phone call from a former director of Envision, Matt Peace, who invited them to move to Taiwan two weeks after they graduated. They accepted, and have provided expert leadership and vision to the site ever since! They now serve with their two sons, Enoch and Noah.

Sarah Mabee came to Taiwan as one of the first Envision interns in 2009 after completing her degree in cross cultural studies at Toccoa Falls College. Sarah has been instrumental in providing leadership and vision for the Aroma Church since its conception in 2012. She took on the role of Envision Site Associate in 2015 and has continued to provide her expert eye for detail in church administration and Envision matters ever since.

Sarah is originally from rural Tennessee and, although she has grown to love city life, she still tries to escape into the mountains of Taiwan whenever possible. Sarah is also a lifelong learner. She received an MBA in Organizational Leadership in 2017 and is trying to decide what she should study next!

Jesse Wagner first joined the Envision Taiwan team in 2013 as a one year intern at the behest of his former college roommate, Chris O’Dell! After his first year in Taiwan, he went back to the States for a bit and then returned to Taiwan in 2015 to serve as a Site Associate. Jesse now takes tremendous care of our teams and interns. From the first inquiry form, to monthly check-ins, to final debriefs, Jesse ensures that our on-site team is well taken care of and in a healthy place to engage in effective ministry.

Before coming to Taiwan, Jesse was a high school communication arts and drama teacher. Jesse is himself a great actor and has been in several professional shows, including Peter Pan in which he played the role of Captain Hook! Jesse’s creative personality and thought process has been invaluable in making the Envision Taipei site the best it can be!

Justin and Brittany Siemens, along with their daughter Kennedy, joined the Envision: Taipei team in the summer of 2015. When Justin isn’t creating media for the cafe or church, he’s out speaking life into his brothers in Christ through huddles and one-on-one discipleship. He has a passion for hearing and telling stories regardless of medium. Having grown up traveling as a missionary kid, he calls South Dakota, USA home base, but home is really wherever his wife and daughter are! When not at work you can often find Justin playing basketball, ultimate frisbee, boardgames, or playing music with friends. Brittany works behind the scenes in the Marketing department for Aroma cafe. You can often find her sipping on caramel macchiatos and working on her computer, either creating advertisements or brainstorming the next big campaign. When she’s not working, she’s usually reading a book, dreaming about her next travel adventure, or hanging out with the coolest four-year-old around!

Nathan Conklin joined the Envision Taipei team in early 2016. Nathan spends the majority of his time working with the Aroma Coffee Shop. He helps with business operations for the shop, as well as behind the bar making drinks and sandwiches. Nathan also teaches English part-time and serves on Aroma Church’s worship team. Nathan is passionate about Business as Missions and empowering people to use their positions and interests for the Glory of God. Nathan is originally from Spring Grove, Pennsylvania and in his free time enjoys playing music, exploring the beautiful country of Taiwan, and spending time with good friends.

Emmilyn Hanus joined the Envision: Taipei as a Resident in 2016, but she had been to Taiwan before that on a short-term trip and also a summer internship through Envision. She has many roles within the Aroma community, but some of the biggest ones are helping coordinate small groups and heading up our Coffee Talk ministry. Emmilyn is originally from Wisconsin. She enjoys being in nature as much as possible and hiking around various parts of Taiwan.

Andrea Olson joined the Envision Taipei site in the summer of 2015. Andrea works full-time at Bigbyte Preschool as an English teacher.  She teaches three and four year olds and enjoys reading, singing and doing arts and crafts with her students. When she isn’t teaching, she helps with Aroma’s Women’s Ministry, sings on the worship team, and disciples ladies in the Aroma’s community.  In her spare time, she loves to read, draw, and spend time with her friends.

Skye Bonati first came to Taiwan as a one-year intern, but returned to Taipei for a two-year residency because of her love of Christ and sharing Him with all she meets! Skye main focus is on Aroma’s worship team as a pianist, and on helping develop the mentoring ministry in Aroma Church. Skye is also a Chinese student at National Taiwan Normal University. Skye loves summers in Taiwan because she also gets to invest in Envision teams and short-term interns by leading sessions and sharing her experiences. You will often find Skye behind a piano, writing her own music, or blogging about her adventures at skyebirdonthefly.wordpress.com.

Michael Gerber is currently serving as an Envision Resident after completing a 9 month internship in Taipei through Envision. Michael is Aroma’s Tech Team leader. He oversees most of Aroma’s technical needs, including things like: Sunday services, music nights at the Aroma, and the training and development of Tech Team volunteers. Michael is also a part-time Mandarin Chinese student at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). He is passionate about communication and sharing God’s love to everyone he comes in contact with, which is why he is focused on learning Chinese to the best of his ability. Michael hails from Monticello, Minnesota, and enjoys resting outside of the city and being an entertainer to different audiences.

Jay Wirkkala came to Taiwan to join Envision Taipei in January of 2017 as a two-year resident. He focuses on learning Chinese and supporting The Aroma Coffee Shop and Church. He then taught English in China for 2 years before serving as an intern with Envision: Bangkok during the summer of 2015. Originally from Castle Rock, Washington, he is the youngest of seven, and loves learning languages, sports, board games, and Thai food.
